Later in the story, Freya disguises herself as the mysterious valkyrie Vanadís, ambushing Kratos and Atreus at their home in Midgard after the latter returned from Ironwood.Īfter a confrontation between the three former allies where Freya gets the upper hand, she decides to let Kratos live as she needs his help to break free from Odin's binding curse in Vanaheim. In Norse paganism, Freyja ( Old Norse ' (the) Lady ') is a goddess associated with love, beauty, fertility, sex, war, gold, and seiðr (magic for seeing and influencing the future). Only time will tell whether Freya will get over her grief and become an ally to the pair, or remain a vengeful mother and become a dangerous enemy throughout the two's adventures. During the 2021 Reveal Trailer, we see her using her shapeshifting powers to ambush the father and son duo. With the death of her son at the hands of Kratos – and by extension Atreus – Freya would likely try to fulfill her vow of revenge against the two throughout much of Ragnarok. The curse is broken after he punches through a mistletoe placed on Atreus' chest, and is subsequently killed by Kratos when Baldur tries to kill Freya, leaving her to vow revenge on Kratos for Baldur's death. This would leave Baldur crazed due to the curse leaving him incapable of feeling anything physically.įreya would refuse to lift this curse, prompting Baldur to seek out other means to remove it, ultimately resulting in conflicts and clashes against Kratos and Atreus years later. Due to her love for her son, Freya was driven to curse Baldur with invulnerability in hopes that it may protect him from all threats. Prior to the events of God of War 2018, and still during her marriage to Odin, Freya would learn of a prophecy that foretold her son Baldur's death. Freya, between her banishment and the time when God of War 2018 would simply keep to her lonely section in the woods under the moniker Witch of the Woods. This decision was met by feelings of betrayal and anger from Odin, causing him to banish Freya to Midgard and curse her so that she may be unable to leave the realm. Freya was the daughter of Njord (also Njordr), a god of the Vanir. As Mimir recounts in his many ramblings about the mythology of Asgard, Freya would eventually choose to turn her back on her marriage with Odin due to the Aesir's cruel ways. While Freya did not typically wield weapons of war, she did possess many accoutrements. Freya is a supporting character in the 2018 video game God of War and the deuteragonist of its 2022 sequel God of War Ragnarök.
